The island of Bootly

Kia ora

In PBL for the past few week we have been looking at different parts of earths nature. We were manly looking  at the soil, air, rocks, water and life forms. We learnt about these things so that we could make an island or world. We could make this world or island on minecraft digitally, a paper mache world, 3d model and a map. I chose to do a map and I named it Bootly. We also had to right a blurb about our island or world and about its soil, air, rocks, water and life forms.

Here is my blurb and a picture of my island.

What have you been doing lately in in PBL?

Reading Between the Lines

Kia ora,

This week for reading we were looking at reading between the lines. We did a few tasks to make sure we know what it is, for when we did our reading. Reading between the lines is where the story teller is telling the reading something without actually saying what it is.

For example instead  of them saying the little girl was happy  they would say the little girl was jumping up and down with glee, there telling the reader that the little girl is happy with out actually saying it.

Our reading create was to make a comic using reading between the lines so that we aren’t saying it directly.                                                      Re you good at reading between the lines?

Here it is

How can we be Champions of Peace?

For the last four weeks of term 3 we have been learning about ‘How can we be Champions of Peace?’

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are Lavender, dove, white poppy/roses, the CND and the had peace sign. These symbols represent peace because of their soothing scent, peace through God and resists us from war.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My Peace Artwork represents peace because I drew a dove over a like with white poppies and roses and a one lavender over the dove.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Malala. I thought this person was a champion of peace because she was brave and stood up for what is right against those that were stronger than her.

We also created a peace prayer book where we had to find multiple peace prayers for different cultures and put it on a slide here it is.

I enjoyed learning about peace because I never really knew what it was and it was a cool subject to learn about with all those people that showed peace in many ways.

I learnt that anyone can be a peacemaker as long as you can show people and lead the way for peace.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by showing leadership and by listening, having respect and showing good values.

Is there a peacemaker that inspires or you look up to?

Climate Change

Kia ora,

This week in reading we were reading a book about climate change called Global action. Did you know the earth’s temperature has risen by an average of 0.14° Fahrenheit per decade since 1880! This is very concerning, if we keep up climate change then we will have a warmer atmosphere, a warmer and more acidic ocean, higher sea levels and eventually we would all die. What would you do to help climate change?

Task board Writing

Kia ora,

Similar to last week we have a task board but this week it was for writing. Again there was 5 tasks and we had to choose 3 one of them was were you had to describe a picture of a creepy house in less than 100 words, I managed to do it in 95 words. Another one I did was that you had to write a letter to your future self and you had to include your age, what your interests are now and what you want t0 be when you’re older.
here is my text about the creepy house-

what have you done in writing  recently?

Task Board Reading

Kia ora,

This week for Reading we had a task board that had five activities on it and we had to choose 3 to do.One I chose was called “The Promise”   where we had to read a book called the promise about four children during a war hiding in a bunker, all really scared without any communication or a light apart from a candle that they agreed to only use an hour a day, wondering if its safe too go out or not. There was other tasks like one about roller coasters were you would read about some roller coasters and then create your own on minecraft or draw on. This is the 3 activities I had to do after I read the book. What have you done resentfully in reading?

Cool Camp

Kia ora,

From Monday the 11th of September to Wednesday the 13th Kaupeka year 7’s went to Wainui camp. It took us about an hour and a half, it was a long ride but fun when I sat next to my friends and played games it made it better.

At camp when we did our activities in groups and my group it was made out of: Elsie, Lauren, Francesca, Neve, Zoe, Caleb, Archie, Danu and Me. Our group leader was a parent helper he is my dad Dave.

In total there were 7 activities which were: archery, coasteering, self led ABL, self led games, orienteering, search and rescue and shelter building. My first activity that my group did was self led ABL. After that I did self led game so it was a very calm day. The next day my group did: shelter building, orienteering, search and rescue and archery.

Orienteering was my favourite activity of the whole camp because it was fun to explore all over the camp to find the number. Our team won we found all of the numbers and came back first! Archery was also pretty fun we got to try out and practise our archery and then we play games. My favourite game we played was one were each section of the target was different points and bullseye was 50 points. One round I hit the line in between bullseye and the next circle out so they said it counted as 50 point I won that round. After we had done all our activities and had dinner we got to go to a campfire. It was fun with heaps of song and games.

The next my voice was a bit sore from the singing but it didn’t stop me from our last activity coasteering. For coasteering  you have to get a wet suits. In coasteering you do something called island hoping; going from each small island and jumping off of a small ledge in different ways. One jump was called the trust fall were you went on the ledge of the rock your going to jump backwards with your arms crossed holding onto your  buoyancy aid (life jacket) and you fall backward trusting the sea to catch you. For me it was my favourite jump because it was our first and the water woke me up!

This is my camp reflection here.

Have you ever been to camp? If you have were and what was your favourite activity?

Spectacular Squishy Circuits

Kia ora

In Science we have been learning about electricity and energy. We have been doing different  experiments through out our lessons.            One of the experiments we did was the squishy circuits. In this experiment I wanted to answer the question: how do you make a light work through a circuit?

Materials needed –

  • Play dough
  • Clay
  • 9V lights
  • Wires
  • Light

Squishy Circuits: Light Up Your Play Doh® Creations! | STEM Activitysource

Before conducting my experiment the hypothesis is that the light will turn on as long as the circuit is closed and it is all connected.

After finishing my experiment I found out that my hypothesis was correct because the light turned on when the circuit was closed. When the circuit was open the light was off.

Something I found interesting during this learning was that if you wanted a circuit to work the circuit had to be closed if it was open then it circuit wouldn’t be connected and it wouldn’t work.

Have you ever made a circuit before? If you have what was it?

Perfect Poems

Kia ora

For the past two weeks in literacy we have been looking at 5 different poems which were Sonnets, List Poems, Limericks, Blackout Poetry, Biographical Poems. We had to choose 4 of the poems to write  and I chose to do a  Sonnet poem, List Poem, Blackout Poetry, Biographical Poem. My favourite one was the Biographical Poem because I wrote it about my friend Sylvie and I got to find out a bit more about her.

What one of my poems do you like the most?

Magic Math

Kia ora

Recently in math we have been learning about statistics. We had to make a math create with a graph representing a spin the wheel and what the results are on a tally chart. I used a pie graph to show the results. The different options for the spin the wheel  is a mid winter breakfast there are Hotcakes, Porridge, Sausage sizzle and Hat Chocolate.

What are some other graphs that you can use?
